Every year, more and more 6th graders come to Julius West. Whether students are from Beall, Ritchie Park, College Gardens, Twinbrook, or any other school, it is always a struggle to get used to a completely new environment. The second quarter has come around, and us 6th graders have been in JW for a couple of months now. Let’s take a look at how 6th graders are feeling so far. We interviewed Olivia S. and Bridget C., 6th graders:

We asked, “Have you settled into JW so far?”

OS: “Yes, this is the second quarter, of course, I have!”

BC: “So far, yeah!”

“What was the hardest part about settling into JW?”

OS: “Probably finding my way around the school because this school is so much bigger than my elementary school.”

BC: “Having the responsibility to get to class on your own in five minutes all around the building.”

“What was the easiest part about settling into JW?”

OS: “That’s hard. Probably opening my locker because I found that quite easy.”

BC: “Probably already knowing people in the school and already knowing how it goes because of my older sister.”

“What do you wish you could change in JW?”

OS: “I guess the crowded hallways because I just want to get to my class on time!”

BC: “Not grading based on tests but grading based off of how you behave in class,”

“What is something you had back in elementary school that you don’t have now?”

OS: “The freedom to talk in class without getting in trouble!”

BC: “No homework grades!”

“What is something you have now that you didn’t have in elementary school?”

OS: “Lockers, seven classes, P.E. and Art/Music every day.”

BC: “More lunch choices!”

“What is a strategy for future 6th graders to use when they are settling into JW?”

OS: “Definitely in your binder, the flap in the front to put a map of JW, that will help a lot. Plus label the stairs going upstairs!”

BC: “Since you are meeting new teachers, don’t be rude, be respectful towards them because first impressions mean a lot!”

Big thanks to Olivia and Bridget for volunteering to be interviewed!
