Early Life

Lionel Messi was born on June 24, 1987 in Rosario, Argentina. When Lionel Messi was a young boy, he would go with his two older brothers and play soccer with them. He wasn’t even intimidated by them. When he was eight, he was recruited to the Newell’s Old Boys (a soccer club in Rosario). He was recognizably smaller than most of the kids in the club, and he was eventually diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency by doctors. His parents, Jorge and Celia, decided to inject growth hormones into Lionel at night. At the age of thirteen, Messi was offered the chance to play at FC Barcelona’s youth academy, La Masia. He and his family went across the Atlantic to Spain. Although he was homesick, he moved quickly through the junior ranks.

Early Adulthood

When Messi was a teenager he was already playing on a professional team. In 2001, Messi joined a Spanish club from Argentina and was considered the greatest “footballer” of his time. Messi was well known for his dribbling as well as his balance, which makes him nearly impossible to steal the ball from. In 2005, Messi scored his first professional goal at the age of 17. From 2008-2009, Messi helped Barcelona achieve their first treble in Spanish football. Messi was the all-time top goalscorer in official competitions and Argentina’s leading goal scorer with 55 goal in 112 matches. In 2009, Messi won the FIFA World Player of the Year. In 2010, Messi won his first Ballon D’Or (Golden Ball award).

Pro Career

Lionel Messi won the Ballon d’Or (golden ball) five times since the start of his career. He set a record for the most goals in a calendar year in 2012. He also set a record when he was sixteen as the youngest to ever score a goal for FC Barcelona. Messi has lead Barcelona to success in his years of playing on the team. 2009 was no different, when Messi won the Champions League Cup, La Liga, and the Spanish Super Cup Titles, showing his skill to the whole world. A fellow Argentinian, legend Diego Maradona, says he sees Messi as a leader. His list of accomplishments is certainly long. Messi is the first player ever to score five goals in a Champions League match, and he surpassed Cesar Rodriguez’s club record of scoring 232 goals, becoming Barcelona’s all time leading scorer.

He recently won the Ballon d’Or in 2013, and he’s not stopping there. Messi will be known as one of the greats, but we can’t wait to see what he’ll do next.
